Goodbye Messenger 8.x, hello Windows Live Messenger 2009
Today is the day that all users who are still using Messenger 8.x, have to upgrade to Windows Live Messenger 2009.
You have to upgrade because of a security issue found in the Microsoft’s ATL library, which is only fixed in the latest version of Messenger. You will be prompted to upgrade, if you decline you will not be able to sign in to Messenger anymore!
If you are using an older version of Messenger on Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 95, Windows Me or Windows 98, you will not receive an upgrade notification. Windows Live Messenger 2009 will not run on these operating systems!
You can read the full announcement here.
The server problems that occurred yesterday may have been a result of preparations for these updates, according to Jonathan Kay. So if you had difficulties getting your messages through: it wasn't you!
